He has an extremely loyal side and is always the first to react when another of his brothers is in trouble. This happens on numerous occasions, like when he stops a blow from hitting Leonardo using only his sai, or kicks the Shredder away from Donatello when the former is about to attack.
Raphael is voiced by Sean Astin in the series. During the first portion of the first episode, "Rise of the Turtles", it was shown that he has exceptional agility, able to dodge all of Donatello's bo staff strikes, before snatching the staff and breaking it. It is also implied that he has won several times before, as he says to Donatello "drop the staff, and no one gets hurt" to which Donatello replies, "I did last time, but you still hurt me.
However, when Splinter congratulated them, Raph bragged about his victory, which caused Splinter to hit a pressure point on his neck and forced him to compliment his brothers. He is once again an impulsive hothead, and also has a normal pet turtle named Spike, which later mutates and becomes this show's version of Slash. His relationship with Leonardo was generally tense, Leonardo's more patient approach contrasting with Raphael's aggression, but he developed a greater appreciation for Leonardo's skills when Raphael's own attempt to serve as the leader showed him that he couldn't cope with the pressure of taking responsibility for his brothers' safety, preferring to risk himself rather than them.
With Michelangelo he insults him but he cares. This is shown when in "New Friend, Old Enemy" he comforts Mikey when he is feeling down, by telling him that he is an awesome guy. Raphael's relationship with Donatello involves rarely serious threats, glares, hitting and insulting, like in "I, Monster", where he throws a rat at him to get him to stop talking.
However, Donatello cares for Raph, for instance having a hard time insulting him in "Turtle Temper", and trying to give him a hand when he is later in the van with the Kraang. Raphael is also petrified of cockroaches until he managed to defeat the mutant cockroach, Spyroach. Raphael's character design was updated, giving him green eyes as well as a small, lightning-shaped chip out of his plastron across his left shoulder.

His shell shows a great deal of distinct battle damage considerably more than those of his brothersand the tails of his mask are tattered and worn. In this sense, he does not care about getting hurt too much in a fight. In "New Girl In Town", he states that he has no problem risking his own life, but he cannot stand to, and therefore will not, risk the lives of his brothers. He is also considerably less angry and serious than previous incarnations, though still eager to get into fights.
Movies[ edit ] Original trilogy [ edit ] In the film adaptationRaphael is voiced by Josh Pais. He speaks with a distinctive tough-sounding New York accent that was imitated in the later versions of TMNTand is the turtle whose character is explored most completely. He has a quick temper, uses profanity and verbally challenges his older brother Leonardo.
This film focuses more so on his feeling of isolation from his brothers and sense of regret and anger when Splinter is eventually captured from the Shredder.
Here, it is established that he shares a closer relationship with news reporter April O'Neil having saved her from the Foot Clan on several occasions. In the films, he is still angry and occasionally goes off by himself in the second movie, but has a soft spot for the young people the team meets.
It is also shown that he has an appreciation for nature as it appears to calm him. His time as the Nightwatcher is one of the few during which Raphael uses a different ninjutsu weapon, the manriki: Unlike his sai, the manriki are typically not lethal weapons, though they could crush a skull if used with enough force.
He resents Leonardo's bossing them around and treating them like "[Leo's] little soldiers" when he at least in Raphael's opinion abandoned them for at least a year. This leads to a physical confrontation between Raphael and Leonardo and resulting in Raphael almost mortally wounding Leonardo before retreating - suddenly realising what he was about to do, and running in fear from his anger. After Leonardo is kidnapped, Raphael then acknowledges his mistake to Master Splinter and confesses what happened and why he understood the reason Leonardo was chosen as the leader.
Master Splinter then explains to Raphael that his tendency to put the world's problems on his own shoulders as a protector of the weak is a great quality and that while he may not be his favorite student, it does not mean he is his least favorite son. Master Splinter then tells Raphael that his strength, his passion, and his loyalty to the people he cares about are also merits of a great leader, if it can be tempered with compassion.
After Raphael, the Turtles, as well as Casey and April rescue Leonardo, Raphael is shown to be eager to fight alongside his brother instead of against him.
Raph's relationship with Donatello is also explored more when Donatello makes it clear that he doesn't like the Nightwatcher. He was also the first to show major concern when he realized Mikey was in danger in New Friend Old Enemy. He was extremely concerned when Mikey got hurt during the battle with Snakeweed, even giving him a hug. Raph seems to be very close with Mikey, and is as protective of him as much as he is with the others as seen in Invasion of the Squirrelanoids when he rescues Mikey from drowning with the Squirrelanoids.
In The InvasionRaph and Mikey really show off their love and feelings for each other. When the other was sad or scared he would give him a hug or tell him something comforting.
Raph loves Master Splinter as a father and a sensei. He often tries to prove to him that he's better than Leo. Splinter is aware of Raph's temper and often must give him a guiding hand to keep his anger in check.
Splinter can be hard on Raph, especially when he picks on his brothers, but never the less sees great potential in him. Splinter often wishes Raph would think more before reacting when it comes to battle. Like with all his sons, Splinter is very protective of Raph.
Raphael loves his father, and showed much concern when he was taken over by the Rat King in "I, Monster. And in The Invasion Raph really lost temper for seeing Shredder throw Splinter to the flowing sewers and he can't do nothing.
He seems to be as protective of her as he is of his brothers. This is seen in "Panic in the Sewers" where he, along with his father and brothers, were reluctant to let April spy on the foot. In that same episode, He, with Donnie's help, saved her from Dogpound when she was kidnapped. He even panicked when Mikey accidentally spilled the Kraang contaminated water on her, thinking she would disintigrate, but she didn't.
Raph though, seems to like to tease her at times, as seen in "The Gauntlet" where he laughed that she was being chased by a giant pidgeon named Pete. Though he has been willing to help her out at times as seen in "Mouser Attack" where he was willing to help his brothers get April's phone back.
Raphael teases his brothers less when around April, probably since she's the first human friend the turtles have and the fact she's a lady despite his "tough guy" persona, he is respectful to women. This is seen when he got Leo and Mikey to quiet down from laughing at Donnie for getting beat up by a monkey, when April entered the room this may also be because he knew Donnie had a crush on April, and was constantly trying to impress her.
Raph and Casey clashed with each other as soon as they met, and grew a quick rivalry. That rivalry dissolved into friendship when they were forced to work togther, and actually saved each other from life-threatening danger. The two of them proved to be so much alike that Donnie stated that now they had two Raphael's now.TMNT 2012 -Season 1 / Mikey - All Slap
He hated Karai from the first moment he saw her. Raph trusts Karai the least considering she's Shredder's daughter, whether adopted by Shredder or not, even telling Leo that their chances of her being on their side wasn't really big, esspecially if it includes revealing the fact that she's Splinter's biological daughter, Miwa.
But it looks like Raph is caring about her since Karai was on their side now that she has accepted that Splinter as her birth father. In Serpent Hunt he even saved her from being shot by Ivan Steranko.
Spike is Raph's pet un-mutant turtle whom he adores. Raphael rescued Spike after he had been flushed down a toilet, and into the sewers. Raphael has a soft spot for Spike which is "adorable" according to Mikey, and often talks to him about his feelings in private.
Spike is very important to Raph, as he needs Spike as a sounding board for his inner thoughts and feelings. He can't reveal his feelings to his brothers lest he ruin his 'tough-guy' reputation so he shares them with Spike. Spike is an excellent listener and always listens to Raph, even if he can't speak. His collection included Katsuhiro Otomo's post-apocalyptic series, Akira.
Mikey sometimes imagines himself to be a superhero. Splinter derived the names of the Renaissance artists he gave his four Ninja Turtle sons from a book he found in the storm drain. Michelangelo's brothers usually call him Mike or Mikey. But Splinter sometimes calls him Michelangelo when he has done something naughty and deserving of a reprimand or punishment. However, the name Michelangelo is ultimately derived from the Hellenized version of the Hebrew name of the Archangel Michael, which means "Who can be compared with God?
Eastman and Laird were forced to keep the misspelling for nearly the first two decades of the existence of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for reasons of their copyright claim.
Later, when he was caught in a battle with Purple Dragon thugs, he showed concern for the frightened cat's welfare. In the Season 2 episode of the TV series, titled "Of Rats and Men," Mikey befriended Ice Cream Kitty, who was transformed into an ice cream cat after eating ice cream contaminated with mutagen.
Mikey's relationship with the mutant alligator, Leatherhead, also illustrates his love for animals. The alligator, who was the victim of horrible experiments by the Kraang, met the Ninja Turtles in the Season 1 episode of the series, titled "It Came From The Depths. Many of the deleted scenes were those in which attempts were made to work on character development for the Ninja Turtles and elaborate more on Casey and April's romance.
In one deleted scene, Michelangelo falls into an unfamiliar introspective state of mind and suffers a bout of severe depression. Had the scene made the final cut, fans of the perpetually upbeat, cheerful, and easy-going Ninja Turtle might have had a hard time reconciling their established notion of the character with the guy who gives vent to his frustrations by destroying a punching bag and tearing down part of the barn wall.
The Secrets of the Ooze to participate in filming the rap scene, actor Michelan Sisti, in his full Michelangelo Ninja Turtle costume, tried to welcome him with a hug.
